**this one’s especially for the dames… (sorry boys)
…as it is for most of us today, the luxurious opulent boudoir with all the glamorous trims & trappings reminiscent of the decadent 1920’s & 1930’s romantic dream is, in reality, just that… a dream…
just as it was for the average gal of the time… facing the great depression of the late 20’s/ early 30’s & then war rationing in the 1940’s, luxuries like perfumes & powders were simply beyond the average gals reach… but that didn’t stop those practical dames from dusting a little bit of rose scented glamour into their lives on a daily basis…
following the recent arrival of this wonderful late 40’s evyan powder box, complete with original cotton puff (a very very happy etsy find) i decided to put my ‘nose to the ground’ to find an original dusting powder recipe…
i discovered several but below is the most basic & simple to make with the minimum ingredients
& here it is dolls…
ROSE AFTER-BATH SCENTED DUSTING POWDER
1 cup cornstarch
1 tbsp orris root powder
1/4 tsp rose essential oil
spoon the cornstarch and orrris root powder into a blender and run on the lowest speed… slowly add essential oil… its that simple …your own dusting powder!
**if you have access to highly scented old roses & a little more patience you can add this extra step… take 3 dried rose heads, remove the stem & leaves, add to 1/2 of the cornstarch & blend to a fine mixture before adding the remaining cornstarch, orris root powder & continuing the recipe as above
**for a different, yet still authentic vintage powder scent, you could replace both the rose oil & dried roses with lavender oil & dried lavender flowers or perhaps orange oil & dried orange rind… or choose any essentials oils you prefer
so get hunting in your favourite vintage stores or jump online & find yourself a beautiful powder box…
& a wonderful big powder puff… try here if you want vintage…
& dust yourself with a little bit of glamour every day ladies…
you’ll come up smelling roses
